I've tried my hand at poetry from time to time and here are a couple of examples:
Candle
Time can be measured through its molten decay.
Rivulets of wax streak its smooth sides like tears on a face.
It sits beside me on my bed-side table.
There to provide solace through these dark nights.
There to hold back the darkness that would seek to sweep me away.
--
A solid block, cream coloured with a blackened wick at its epicentre.
Nothing special to look at but it causes the shadows to spring to life.
I lie here, nowhere to go, just watching its flame flicker in the gloom.
If I reach out my finger its heat warms me but too much would burn.
--
Its sides are flat, uniform, rectangular.
It sits upon the saucer.
Outside I hear the wind wail and the sea whisper as if calling my name.
Inside, my candle still burns, dependable, reassuring.
Still some time, some wax left to burn.

All that remains
A skeletal frame is all that remains,
Lying disconsolate in the middle of the thoroughfare,
But no-one cares.
--
Death is everyday;
Oblivion lurks around every corner,
With its aftermath just detritus to be skirted around,
Not a reason to desist from the relentless pursuit of urgent agendas.
--
Not far from this place the small ones play,
Frolicking like new born lambs,
Unaware of the butchery that lies ahead.
--
Death is everywhere;
Life just the most fleeting of synaptic impulses,
Before the carnivorous appetites of smiling assassins,
Manifests itself with an all too inevitable outcome.
